fe SPARKLE RESPONSIBLY
Glitter adds just the right touch of glamour and
light, whether it’s in makeup or an all-over body
product. But use it judiciously or risk gleaming like
a disco ball. For the face, that means focusing the
sparkle in one particular area, like eyes or cheeks,
says Sara Bira, a Sephora Pro Beauty Team artist.
On the body, use it to highlight. Tap (don’t brush)
down the center of the arm or leg, and across the
shoulders. Tip: Do a preparty practice session.

STEAM CLEAN
Winter is prime time for a facial. This deep
cleansing sweeps away dead, flaky skin and pore-
clogging oils, then reinvigorates with a dose of
intense hydration to leave skin beaming in a way
no cream can. But it’s a rookie mistake to get one
too close to a special event. Book the facial for two
to three weeks beforehand to give any redness
(not uncommon) a chance to subside.

CLUTCH HITTER
Why is it the cutest evening purses never have
enough room for all the essentials (lipstick, keys,
phone, wallet)? Swap that small satin number for a
great-looking makeup bag like Smashbox’s The
Gold List ($49), which includes makeup minis. Not
only are cosmetic bags often less expensive—
they’re roomier, too. But don’t wait till the last
minute to accessorize or you’ll be left— dare
we say—in a clutch.
16 EAU DE YOU
The holidays are the perfect
time to search out a new
scent, since retailers try to
entice you with special gift
with purchases. But just like
choosing a mate, the search for
a signature scent shouldn’t be left to chance.
Pick up some samples at the beauty counter,
because you’ll want to wear it around; date it
for a bit to make sure it’s the right one. Here
are some ideas to get you started. For the
traditionalist: Elizabeth Arden Red Door,
a luxurious red rose floral that celebrates
the brand’s 100-year heritage; $32. For the
minimalist: Faith Hill True, an elegant mix of
Japanese yuzu, gardenia, lily, and mimosa, $25.
For the romantic: Pure Orchid by Halle Berry
based on the exotic Masdevallia orchid, $ 28.

LIP LOCK
While you’re out shopping for others, swing
by the cosmetics counter and pick up a new
party-pretty lipstick. This time, steer clear of the
neutral shades and step outside your box with a
vampy pink, berry, or red.
[â WHITEN UP
These days, anyone with a cell phone has a
camera, and that means everyone, so go for some
smile maintenance. Crest 3D White Whitestrips
Professional Effects will have you flashing those
pearly whites confidently in three days; $55.
[5 NAIL IT
Long on parties and short on spare time? Then
CND’s Shellac manicure is right up your alley:
It’s a smudge- and chip-proof, high-shine
polish that lasts for two weeks. At the salon, a
nail technician paints on the formaldehyde-,
toluene-, and DBP-free nail color, curing each
coat under a UV lamp. After the last layer
there’s no drying time and no nicks, so if you
get Shellaced right before Christmas, you’ll
stay perfectly polished well into the New Year;
from $30. For info, go to
cnd.com.
TIME OUT
Stop moving, if only for an hour. Get a massage.
Take a long, luxuriant bath. Carve out some time
to put yourself first. ■
